After years of delaying and trying to keep all of this under wraps, the Department for Work and Pensions has finally been forced to release the number of confirmed deaths arising from its brutal welfare sanctions. At least 2380 people with disabilities have died between 2011 and 2014 due to having been wrongfully declared "fit for work". http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/aug/27/thousands-died-after-fit-for-work-assessment-dwp-figures See the video below for the testimony of the sister of Mark Wood, a 44 year old Aspie who starved to death after being declared "fit for work".
This is just one example of the harrowing indignity disabled people in the UK are forced to endure under Conservative Party rule. If you have friends or family intent on voting for the Conservatives, show them this video. Ask them if this is the kind of country they want to live in.
Should non-profit organisations dedicated to autism advocacy and support remain politically neutral? Many would argue that a lack of neutrality on the part of such an organisation could put certain people off of seeking support due to their differing views, but what if it can be conclusively proven that the policies of a particular party have and will continue to lead to the preventable deaths of vulnerable autistic people? Here in the UK, we know for a fact that well over 2000 people have died as a result of the Conservative Party's deeply unfair welfare regime, one of whom was a vulnerable autistic man who starved to death after having his only source of income withdrawn. Given the difficulties many on the spectrum face in gaining employment, it is inevitable that more deaths of a similar nature will follow. Is it then right for any organisation dedicated to supporting people on the spectrum not to explicitly advise against voting Conservative? Do organisations who fail to warn the public of the fatal consequences of right-wing policy for the disabled bear moral responsibility for every life lost? And how is it anything short of an utter betrayal of our community for the National Autistic Society to employ three active Tory politicians as vice-presidents? What are your thoughts on the matter?
