Ok so I was thinking last night while watching television with my dog, do people with Asperger's have more of a connection with their pets than someone without Asperger's ( a normal person ) would?

See I look at my dog as my best friend she's loyal and won't gossip behind my back, she always knows when I'm feeling down and will come over and give me a cuddle, when I'm cold she will lay on my feet to keep them warm. I feel like I have more of a connection with her than what I do with people, I know I probably sound silly but I was just wondering if anyone else feels like they have more of a connection with their pets than they do with people.

Pets are easier to understand than people. I always know if my cat is feeling hungry, tired or anything else, so we're best friends. I always thought one of my dogs is sort of "aspieish" because he doesn't understand other dogs (well, I think in reality it's because he wasn't socialised since he was a rescue) but he has the symptoms -

he would be one of the loud and clueless stereotype, who rush up to new people and assume the other person is their friend. He also has sensory overloads in busy places.

With regards to pets not gossiping and always being loyal etc, I sometimes wonder if everyone can feel like that with their pets (not just aspies) because I think I've heard something similar a few times. It's definitely true though! The difference (in my case, anyway) is that while I have this connection that others have, I have less "people" relationships, so my pet relationship is probably the strongest relationships I have, while other people become very close to friends, and even closer to family.

I find animals just as hard to understand as people so not much difference for me. But maybe it's because i don't have any interest in having a pet. I have enough work having a family and keeping my kids happy.

I would love to have dogs, but we can't afford it right now. I look at everyone else's dogs and want them :( There's a few close to us that we see regularly been taken for a walk - there's a really lovely Golden Retriever ('Golden'), a Basset Hound ('Long Dog') and then a dog I can only describe as 'Velvet Dog' because he looks like he's made from velvet. XD OH and 'Dulux Dog' (from the paint adverts) whichever kind he is, someone has one and he's gorgeous! lol it's like they all have a code name.

Anyway - I think I'd feel closer to a pet than to most humans. I always loved having fish, even though they just swim around :D

I have two dogs right now and I would have to say i myself do feel more of a connection to them then people for the same reasons. I guess it's because they don't judge like some people do because of how society has decided what social conditioning should be whare as those if us on the spectrum just can't get it animals haven't been conditioned with such BS.

All I can say is there aren't many people who give unconditional love are there. pets won’t be friends with you if are socially akward either.

Yes I do only with cavalier dogs. But the one I lost was my absolute best friend- he helped me to communicate. I could tell him everything. He knew when i was sad and poorly and comfort me. I knew the same and looked after him too. Me and Charlie had funny times
