Stories for Children on the Spectrum

Recommended Posts

Willow

Hiya guys :)

Anyone can answer, but I'd really appreciate the help of parents with children on the Autistic Spectrum.

I think what I'm asking about would be called social stories. But they're whatever you want to call them: short stories for children with Autism or Aspergers, aimed at helping them understand things better in a fun and light hearted way.

I am going to be writing some stories with my characters Koby and Friends and I want to know if there's any specific thing you would like to be covered. The first one I am doing is about sharing. I grew up with a younger brother who struggled a lot when he was a toddler/very young child, so I know a lot about coping methods (well the ways we coped anyway) and about what can set a child off. And of course, I have Aspergers, my partner has Aspergers etc, so I think I should do okay.

Also, can you tell me which font you prefer in terms of being the best for your children to read and copy, whilst still being accurate to how they are taught at school.

I think that's a really good idea willow! I don't think I can add anything, and asking the parents is the right thing, I just thought I would comment on how strongly I dislike the bottom two fonts, although that would be completely a personal opinion of course!

Ditto to what Iggy says, I think this is a great idea.

Personally I like font two and three... it's a shame there's not a middle ground with those as that'd be perfect I think, although those two to me are easy to read.

I was wondering if things like road safety, siblings - how to interact with them, food and meal times, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, socialisation, pets - our best friends?, friendship.. that sort of thing.  They're all things I think kids might struggle to understand throughout their growing up.  I know I'm not a parent of a child with ASD, so I hope you don't mind my input.

I think you need to cover that in games and competitions you won't always win, as you know Harry had a lot of issues about losing and found it very upsetting so maybe you could do something where it's okay to lose.

This is the overall style I'm going with, I've used the most popular font so far (a lot of people replied on my Facebook page). This is the front cover and first page of my story.

So far this looks absolutely fantastic, Willow! I think it's a really good idea, it will work very well. It's bright and attractive, and will be easy to understand and follow for a young reader. Spot on! :D

This looks really good Willow. I think I prefer fonts 2 and 3 but cant decide which one of those two I like best!

I think another topic that would be good to cover would be going to the Doctor or Dentist. I know Megan used to get very upset at going to the doctors and would sometimes literally be hanging off of the waiting room door handle trying to get out! Also, getting Megan to take medicine when she needed to was really hard work!

It looks absolutely amazing Willow! I personally like font number 2. This will make an excellent children's book (If I had children this is the sort of thing I would be reading to them).

It is a good idea but do use a font type that can be read readily.

I personally like font 2.

The idea for the stories are awesome, though I'll admit that seeing Koby sad on the cover makes me a little sad.
