Aspie Books

Recommended Posts

I am looking for good books about Aspergers (or Autism). Primarily non-fiction, but I'm interested in fiction too. I'm struggling to understand and deal with some of my Aspie issues and am feeling very isolated right now. I enjoy connecting here but it's not enough. I love books and am looking for a book to help me feel understood and connected as well as develop a better understanding of what I'm struggling with and maybe discover some new/better ways of dealing with the difficult things. I have read Tony Attwood's "Complete Guide to Asperger's" but it was too dry. I'm looking for something more personal.

The Holidays are beautiful and wonderful but they are also difficult and stressful. I despise dressing up and sitting uncomfortably in other's houses trying to figure out what to say. It's a major reminder of how different I am from my family and leaves me feeling very isolated. Books are my escape. Thought a good book might help me get through these tough days and weeks.

My personal favorite is: 'Been There, Done That, Try This',. It's chalked full of helpful information from a variety of aspies.

I found "Appreciating Asperger Syndrome" by Brenda Boyd particularly helpful, as it focuses on the positive aspects and not just the negative. It also offers advice.

There are many very good autobiographies on the subject of AS. Two I read early on and which I would highly recommend are "Standing Down, Falling Up" by Nita Jackson and "Freaks, Geeks and Asperger's Syndrome" by Luke Jackson. "Martian in the Playground" by Clare Sainsbury and "The Feeling's Unmutual" by Will Hadcroft also spring to mind but there are plenty of others.

The title alone has me intrigued. I've already put this one in my Amazon cart. :)
