Do We Even Have Asperger's Anymore?

Recommended Posts

All I see are dozens of mouths moving up and down and a drowning of chitter-chatter after about ten minutes while I'm checking around for the nearest exit.  It is just no fun for me to sit there and be blanked out like that.  That isn't who I am.  I have better things to do with my time.

Sadly it does have consequences when it comes to dating because those are also the places the hottest ladies hang out.  Then there are also the missed networking opportunities especially in terms of work.  Did you know many people have landed dream jobs just by talking to the right person in a pub?  Did you know that social networking in a company is a sure-fire way towards promotion?  And so if you do have a social difficulty whether it is Asperger's or something very similar then you do have significant disadvantages in life.

I can believe that but seeing as thats how you get contacts thats obviously going to be the nature in any job anyway.

I couldnt survive in that environment and have no desire even to attempt to or wish to be there so im certainly not worried about missing out.

If I were to think of something im missing out on and that would be artists abilities.

I cant draw or paint but I can appreciate it in whats in the art world. If I had to think of something im missing it would be that not jobs and pubs.

Mmm...but just think of all that money you're missing out on from such opportunities.

Opportunities you will never get from being on benefits alone.

Opportunities to reach out and afford the kind of life you could only ever dream of right now.

The kind of life where you can buy what you want and buy things for your family at Christmas.

The kind of life where you can have more than what some letter says you're entitled to.

Im putting nobody down on the site but there are people here that wouldnt have a chance in a workplace environment or dealing petty officials but you can and me and certain others here too.

It's not that we don't have a chance, it's just that we don't have it easy. Everyone has a chance. If someone wants something bad enough then they can work towards getting it. Never tell people they don't have a chance! Even if you spend your whole life hoping and working towards your dream, you were pursuing your goal, it's something to aim for, to live for. There is hope for everyone, and hope is especially important for those of us who don't have it easy.

I'm sure there are those who believe they will never get a job.  Some believe that those on the spectrum cannot even hold down a job.

But I know many people on the spectrum who do have jobs - some who have very good ones.  There is even a Danish company (Specialisterne Denmark) where all of the business consultants are on the spectrum or similar conditions.

So there is hope for everyone and just because someone has adapted and found coping strategies to staying in a job it doesn't mean they therefore are not on the spectrum!

But coming back to the OP's question of "Do we even have Asperger's anymore?"
:

I would say that we shouldn't be looking at that but instead on an individual be identifying which areas of asperger's affects us the most so that we can work at those areas.

The areas I most have difficulty with are the areas of employment and relationships which are both pretty big areas in terms of general life.  It was in these areas where my asperger traits were first flagged up and naturally these are the areas where I continue to have difficulty.

But rather than sticking my head in the sand I'm working at it and I take great inspiration from companies like Specialisterne Denmark as I've linked above.

And so far we've only spoken about the kinds of addictions we can talk openly about.  There are many others.  I suppose that can be a source of vulnerability.  A person is quite vulnerable if they risk getting involved in substances not already talked about as a form of coping mechanism for social difficulties everyone else takes for granted.

That is quite serious because in doing so that coping mechanism could land them in a lot of trouble and even lead to loss of liberties.

Some serious stuff really.

Now I'm not talking about any of us here but there is definitely a risk factor here especially for those who don't know to seek out help.

I see your point but it all comes down to the fact that you dont care about yourself enough to worry about the risks as whatever happens is no worse than the place you are at the moment. Thats the logical point of view if your thinking normally as in one risk against another.

If your contemplating suicide its not because your looking to die its because you dont want to live the only option that makes sence when your feeling irrational.

When your low your vulnerable yes thats when you need help if your lucky you get it if you dont then you do become this victim.
