What's worrying is that I sound so convincing with it. I even catch out the very best - particularly those pompous types who use it to tear people down.

I try to use it for good nowadays.

Would the using it for good be treating those pompous types who tear people down a lesson, perhaps? If not, you might want to consider it :D

That's exactly it. I'm very careful now with HOW I use it.

Always with a purpose I would imagine. I believe sarcasm should never be wasted.

An excellent thread Ben. I could easily choose five hundred songs but here are a top five in an approximate rank order:

1. I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet - Gonzalez (album version)

2. December 1963 - The Four Seasons

3. I Can Dream About You - Dan Hartman (12 inch)

4. Right Time Of the Night - Jennifer Warnes

5. Guitar Song - Texas

I had thought of a similar thread for a while but never got round to it. Mine was going to be a top ten so maybe cheekily I will add five more:

6. I Need You - The Pointer Sisters

7. Everything's Tuesday - Chairmen Of the Board

8. How Can I Be Sure - Randy Jackson

9. When Will You Make My Telephone Ring - Deacon Blue

10. Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder

Christ, this is hard. I think I'll have to do two lists - one for average-length songs and another for prog epics, because the latter have an unfair quantity advantage; putting a well-written two-minute song up against ~50% of an album just isn't fair. Here goes...

  1. The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
  2. John Lennon - How?
  3. David Bowie - Quicksand
  4. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
  5. The Incredible String Band - The First Girl I Loved
  1. Genesis - Supper's Ready
  2. Yes - The Gates of Delirium
  3. Genesis - The Cinema Show
  4. Yes - And You And I
  5. King Crimson - Level Five
